There is nothing more moving and powerful, than when a daughter can say to her parents: “From now on, I honour you by finding my own way.” How can coaching and business consulting play an imminent role to get there?

The NEW takes over from the OLD

It is the everlasting struggle between the established and the upcoming, between the OLD and the NEW. It happens in every family. When a child is starting his own family with a partner, something NEW is created. And both partners do ideally everything to make it thrive.

The same happens in business: A successful supermarket chain is starting its own e-commerce company. The e-commerce is the NEW and it is applying completely new technologies and does everything different. However, its roots lie in the still powerful OLD supermarket chain.

The Struggle

For a young couple, both partners have their roots in different families and therefore different traditions. And these OLD family-systems are very powerful. So, when partners are not grown up, they tend to follow their wish to still belong to those old systems. Doing so, they often forget to build something completely NEW, which belongs to both partners only. And this often results in severe conflicts, because grandparents tend to call upon the loyalty of their children. This tends to drive a wedge between the young couple. If the young couple does not resist, there are only two solutions:

  1. One partner gives in and follows the tradition of the other. In Vietnam, this is usually the wife who follows the tradition of the husband.
  2. The connection of the couple does not work out, which results in separation.

In a similar way, young creative NEW “daughter-companies” are usually financed by their mother companies, and the OLD may still strongly influence the decisions of the NEW.

For a system to thrive, it is dangerous to cut the roots of the NEW. But on the other hand, keeping the influence of the OLD too dominant, will kill creativity and stop renewal. In summary, it will put the survival of the entire system at risk.

Priority and Balancing with Systemic Constellation

With ConsulToSee business consulting it is possible to bring the struggles between old and new to a new level. It becomes a boost for development. With systemic constellation, you can see how systemic hierarchy plays out: The priority always needs to be on the NEW. But in order to thrive, the NEW needs to acknowledge the OLD as its origin. Furthermore, with systemic constellation, you find the right strategy to achieve both:

  1. In the family context,
personal development coaching may lead to a deeper understanding of needs and intentions. The result may be more regular visit of the parents or setting up a family shrine.
  2. In a business context,
business consulting or team development workshops raise the awareness for the needs of the NEW and the experience of the OLD as a resource. A sign of acknowledging each other can work wonders: It may be an exhibition about the new e-commerce company in the head office of the OLD or for the NEW, a place or act of remembrance of their roots.

The inner Movement in Business Consulting

Most important for Dr. Torsten Seeger is always, the inner movement which leads to the find the proper outer symbols:

  • of the OLD to appreciate and take pride in the thriving of the NEW, and
  • of the NEW to acknowledge and honour the OLD being its roots.

There is nothing more moving and powerful, than when a daughter can say to her parents: “From now on, I honour you by finding my own way.”
